If you are looking for a great value in a beard trimmer, you should definitely check out the Remington MB4040. It offers excellent performance at a very affordable price. It definitely ranks as one of the best beard trimmers on the market today.
This trimmer has a number of very good features that do not cost a lot of extra money. In fact, when combined with the price, this may be one of the more attractive groomers on the market. Let’s jump right into the features and I think you’ll start to see what I am talking about.
The MB4040 uses a lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable battery that seemingly lasts forever. Remington states you will get 120 minutes of run time from each charge, and some people report going for weeks and months without having to charge the battery.
By way of comparison, most beard trimmers only give you a 45-60 minute runtime on a single charge. At a minimum, the MB4040A doubles that time. If you give it a complete charge before you leave the house, you could go on a long trip and never need to recharge it.
Also, since the batteries are so powerful, they are able to drive a stronger motor. According to Remington, the trimmer has twice as much power. The bonus is that the battery charges in only three hours. Some trimmers take about that long to charge a 45 minute battery.
Li-ion – It’s Not A Big Cat
If you are not already familiar with Li-ion batteries, let me tell you a little about them so you can appreciate what you are getting. Rechargeable batteries use one of several different kinds of chemistry to store energy. Understandably, some are more efficient than others. However, some also do a much better job of storing energy for a long period of time when unused. Also, different batteries have different charging characteristics.
The Li-ion battery used in the MB4040 is one of the top chemistries on the market. Lithium-ion batteries are what is used in the top end laptop computers, smart phones and other electronics products. Few beard trimmers use the Li-ion type batteries because other chemistries can be cheaper when bought in bulk.
In addition to the incredible run time the big thing that benefits you is the battery will not develop a “memory.” Cheap NiCad batteries found in some trimmers can develop a “false memory” that prevent them from taking a full charge. That could mean you will find yourself with a 10 minute runtime. That cannot happen with a Li-ion battery.
How Long Do You Want It?
This Remington model has nine different adjustment settings for beard length. You can get as close as 1.5mm and as long as 18mm. I like that there is a wide range of lengths available to you. However, I wish there were more than only nine different settings.
For many people, nine different lengths offer plenty of choice. But, my concern is that one length might be a bit long for you, but the next shortest length could be closer than you want. If this is the case, you are not likely to be happy with the trimmer just because you can’t get it right where you like it.
There are some brands that allow for greater variation, and the Remington MB4550 actually allows for an incredible 175 different length settings. If you are very particular about your trimming length, you might want to look at another unit.
Blades can make the difference between a good trimmer and a great trimmer. Combined with the motor, these are the things doing the work. Sharp blades will slice through coarse whiskers, while dull ones will just pull at the hair.
Remington selected titanium coated, carbon steel blades for this beard trimmer. Carbon steel can hold a fantastically sharp edge, and that is good. However, carbon steel is also susceptible to corrosion. When working in the high-humidity environment of a bathroom, that could spell trouble.
Fortunately, Remington coated the blades with titanium. The coating prevents corrosion while allowing the steel to retain its edge. They provide a sharp, clean cut for efficient trimming without having to do constant maintenance like with some brands.
According to the company, the blades are self-lubricating. Even so, I still like to add a drop of light oil to the blades once a week to keep them running smoothly. I uses sewing machine oil, which I find works perfectly. Add to the mix the Remington’s powerful motor and you get a good trim quickly and effortlessly.
The Remington MB4040 uses a click wheel, not unlike what is found on a computer mouse, that allows you to quickly set the beard hair length. Rotate the wheel to the desired length setting and it clicks into place. It is one of the easiest ways of adjusting trim length I have seen.
A rubberized grip covers the exterior of the Remington beard trimmer. This allows you to maintain a solid grip even in a steamy bathroom. Sure, it may not seem dangerous, but drop that sucker on your toe and you’ll be hobbled for days.

Cleaning & Maintenance
First thing: don’t get it wet. You cannot use this beard trimmer in the shower; it is not rated for operation while wet, nor should it be immersed in water. However, the head can be washed or rinsed off. That way you can easily keep it clean.
To rinse the head, remove it from the trimmer body using the instructions included in the package. It is not hard at all and you should not have any problems doing it. Once you have rinsed it off, make sure you completely dry it. Even though the blades are titanium coated, you do not want to promote corrosion by leaving them wet.
After rinsing and drying the head, I recommend a very light coat of sewing machine oil.
You can rinse the cutting head with rubbing alcohol for the best level of cleanliness and hygiene. Alcohol will not cause corrosion and it will actually sanitize the blades to kill any germs.
I actually do not recommend regular rinsing of the trimming head. The MB4040 comes with a soft brush that can be used to sweep out any small cuttings. Tapping the trimmer head on a countertop covered with a hand towel will shake most of the cutting free. The brush can then get the rest.
One of the things I like to see is a company that is willing to “be there” after the sale. There is no way to know if you will like the trimmer until you get it home and give it a try. Well, that is where Remington really stands out.
The company offers a 60 day money back guarantee. If you get it home and it does not perform to your liking, send it back to Remington for a full refund. You need to save your receipt, of course, but it is hard to beat that kind of deal.
Further, Remington offers a two-year warranty on the trimmer. Should it break, blow up or otherwise die on you due to a manufacturing defect, they will fix it. Don’t expect to drop it into a campfire and get a replacement, but should the motor burn out during normal beard trimming, they will make it right.
This beard trimmer is rated as a “best buy” by many of the users who have evaluated it. Among the frequent observations is the ease of use, incredible battery life, the sharp blades and the superior value it represents.
Included with the beard trimmer are the charger, user manual and three different attachments: beard, goatee and stubble.
