Sometimes a manufacturer will introduce a new generation of product with cosmetic differences, but few substantive improvements. The “fins” on American cars during the last century was a prime example.
Occasionally, however, a company will announce a product that is a genuine leap forward in technology and design. I think that is the case with the Philips Norelco QT4070.
This beard trimmer is an amazing piece of technology, from the built-in vacuum to suck away trimmings to the LCD screen providing you with details about the trimmer, battery status and more. It is an impressive bit of gear and I think you will be blown away by this incredible grooming tool.
“Loaded with features” is what every car commercial tells you when you are trapped between segments of your favorite TV show. Well, as cliched as it sounds, that is exactly what the QT4070 beard trimmer is. Let’s break down some of the most important things you might be interested in.
Among the best features:
- a built-in vacuum
- 18 different cutting levels
- incredible battery
- runs while charging
Having a built-in vacuum alone is worth upgrading to this groomer. Even so, Philips Norelco added a number of other fantastic features to their top of the line beard trimmer. Among these is an awesome battery, ability to run corded and cordless, a large variety of trimming lengths and a special vacation feature.
The Norelco 4070 beard trimmer has a built-in vacuum for collecting cut hairs as you groom. This highly prized feature help keep a clean bathroom while you keep a professional appearance.
I did notice that shorter hair was almost entirely contained, while longer hair sometimes would escape the suction. I presume that the longer hair is heavier and the vacuum just doesn’t have the power to pull in all of the hair if it has been a long time since you last trimmed. If you trim on a daily basis, you will not have any problems with it. If you have good growth and go for a week or more, you should expect some trimmings to escape.
There is a collection trap where the beard clippings are contained. This trap is easily opened and emptied. A small included brush can help in cleaning it out. If you have a lot of hair trimming to do, you may have to empty the trap halfway through the beard trimming. If you are grooming every day, you won’t need to do this.
In case you are worried about noise that may be created by the vacuum feature, don’t be. The trimmer with the vac running doesn’t make any more noise than the average electric razor. That is to say, the noise is present, but it isn’t loud. You can certainly trim up your beard in the morning without waking the wife or girlfriend.
The QT4070 offers 19 different cut length settings from 1mm to 18mm plus it has a stubble setting (0.5mm or 1/64″). If you want a stubble trimmer, this is a good choice. Ditto if you like a full beard, but want to keep it neatly trimmed.
Adjustments to the trimming length is made with a zoom ring in the mid-section of the tool’s body. You simply move the click ring to the length you want and it is set.
As with many quality beard trimmers, this Norelco model has self-sharpening, stainless steel blades. Keeping them clean and lightly oiled will make sure they last a lifetime.
A note about combs: The trimmer ships with two combs that fit over the trimming head. One is a stubble comb and the other is a contour following comb. It seems that several years ago, Philips Norelco was not shipping one of them with the trimmer and that caused a bit of heartache for some people.
However, the company has been shipping both combs with the trimmer for at least two years now. If you read a review that is complaining about the lack of combs, or about a problem with the contour comb, those are old reviews and not applicable to the current shipping beard trimmer.
This Phillips Norelco beard trimmer has a handy LED screen that shows you the exact setting, charge level on the battery and more. The display is bright and easy to read. Few other grooming products have anything that is remotely similar. While it is not absolutely necessary to have one, I really like the display.
A special “turbo” mode is available on these trimmers. When activated, it increases power to the cutting blades and the vacuum fan. While it does drain more power, it also increase performance. This is especially handy if you let your beard grow out for a while and you decide to trim it back.
I never felt like I needed the turbo mode. At no point did the motor seem to bog down with my beard, and so I never ran into a situation where I needed it. I did activate it with the intent to see what it would do, but I couldn’t notice any performance difference. It is very possible that this is a great feature that will work for the thickest of beards. But, for the average guy, the normal power is more than enough juice for clean cutting.
Without making any corny references to absolute power, I do want to point out that this is one of the best batteries and charging systems I have ever seen in a beard trimmer. I say this for two reasons. First, the battery is a high capacity lithium ion. Second, the trimmer will run while plugged in and charging.
As I’ve said before in other reviews, the best rechargeable battery you can get in an electric beard trimming tool is a lithium ion (Li-ion) style. These kinds of batteries tend to hold a dense charge and never develop a memory. By dense charge, I mean that for their size, they hold a lot of electricity. Li-ion batteries are used in all of today’s smart phones and laptop computers.
Beard trimmers like the QT4070 can use a lot of power. A Li-ion battery keeps the overall size small while still delivering a lot of run time. A single charge will run this trimmer for about 75 minutes. Rapid charging is another feature of these kinds of batteries. The groomer will take a full charge in just one hour.
Unlike many other cordless trimmers, the QT4070 allows use while plugged in. This means you can still get a good trim when the battery has completely discharged. This is a handy feature, and it keeps you out of a tight spot.
If you think this feature is important, please check carefully when comparing to other trimmers. I cannot stress this enough: most trimmers do not run when plugged into an AC outlet. The cords are for charging the batteries only. The QT4070 is one of the only beard trimmers that will do this.
Cocked, Locked and Ready to Rock
While any trimmer I have reviewed would be fine for traveling, this one is clearly a superior product. First, the Li-ion battery discharges very slowly when compared to other battery types. That means you can take a fully charged unit with you on the road and it won’t go dead just waiting on you to use it. It will be ready when you are.
The QT4070 beard trimmer has a special lock that prevents the unit from turning on while traveling. This lock will help prevent unintentional battery discharge. The last thing you want is for the trimmer to get switched on during some rough baggage handling and then you have a dead battery when you arrive at your destination.
In case you are wondering, Li-ion batteries are perfectly safe for travel and are discussed at the US Department of Transportation website here.

Warranty and Guarantee
Philips Norelco offers both a guarantee and a warranty with this product. First, the company guarantees you will like it, or within the first 45 days they will completely refund your money. Obviously, keep your receipt.
Also included is a two-year manufacturer’s warranty which protects you should something go wrong later down the road. The warranty is a “world warranty” meaning that you can buy it in one country, and they will still fix it even if you are in a different country. For example, you get a job in Italy. While in Rome, the trimmer stops working. Even though you bought the trimmer while you were still in the US, the company will fix it locally for you.
What is the BeardTrimmer 7300?
In case you did not know, Philips is a Dutch company that has been selling consumer goods for more than 100 years. Due to another company with a similar name, Philips began using the name Norelco for products sold in the US in the 1940’s. In recent years, the company started co-branding products, so you now will see Philips Norelco instead of just Norelco.
That said, there are sometimes cases where the company is selling the same product, but under two different names due to the markets it is selling in. That is the case here as well.
Bottom line: If you see the Norelco BeardTrimmer 7300, that is the exact same product as the Philips Norelco QT4070 beard trimmer.
I really like this trimmer. It has an awful lot of power and extra features that I would not have expected for the incredibly affordable price.
If I had to pick just one feature that sets this trimmer apart, it would be the vacuum system. That little gem helps keep the sometimes-messy beard grooming event manageable. This is going to sound stupid, but a close runner up is the very cool display. Perhaps that is a bit vain, but I’m trying to be honest.
If you get one of these, I do not think you will be disappointed.
