When looking for the best body shaver, men often turn to Philips Norelco. The Philips Norelco name has long been associated with high quality personal grooming products, and that has never been more true than right now in the 21st century.
Philips Norelco offers an entire line of body trimmers called the Bodygroom. These body hair shavers and trimming tools offer exceptional value as they are built to a high quality standard and have very reasonable prices. Different models offer a variety of features and come in at a range of price points. If you are looking for a man’s personal body grooming tool, you will likely find the perfect one in this line.
Philips Norelco offers an entire line of body hair trimmers and shavers that have an excellent reputation. The Bodygroom line of trimmers are all cordless, which allow you to freely move about and get every area on your body that you wish to keep clean. The newest models are the BG2028, BG2038 and BG2040. However, other models like the BG2020 are still sold and are very good trimmers in their own right.
Here are the highlights in the current line up. Follow the links to the full reviews on each.
As an all-in-one body grooming solution, the Philips Norelco BG2020 is tough to beat. The rechargeable body hair trimmer is water resistant, so it can be used for wet shaving or even in the shower. Fifty minutes of run time is standard on a single charge, and the battery will be fully charged in about eight hours.
The BG 2020 uses stainless steel cutting blades, and they do not require frequent maintenance. According to many reviewers, the trimmer is perfectly safe on all areas of the body including the genitalia and groin. For most men, this is one of the toughest areas to comfortably trim up. This trimmer can handle it with ease.
If you are concerned primarily with back hair, this trimmer can handle it with ease. The same goes for underarm and chest hair. Some folks claim the trimmer works best on leg hair.
The Philips Norelco BG2028 is the latest addition to the Boygroom line. Considered a “budget” entry, this value priced body hair removal tool is loaded with features that are sure to make any man happy.
First off, the BG 2028 comes standard with three combs, which gives the user a choice of levels to which to cut. The lengths are 3mm, 5mm and 7mm combs. This should appeal to the vast majority of men.
Even though it is not waterproof, the shaver still allows the user to get a wet shave with foam or gel. Dry trimming is, of course, always an option. Many people prefer to have a wet shave, and this unit will allow them to do so.
The BG2028 has pearl tips to help prevent scratches and improve comfort. Also, the shaving foil is hypo-allergenic. Everything is easy to clean.
The Philips Norelco BG2030 is no longer being made and has been replaced by the vastly superior BG2040 below. It can still be found in some places, though at ridiculously expensive prices. We recommend avoiding those and sticking to the BG 2040. It is a better trimming unit and will be backed by a two year warranty.
Also called the Bodygroom Plus, the BG2038 is a body trimming tool that is able to help you clean up the following areas:
The Philips Norelco BG2038 Bodygroom Plus has a number of really nice features to make grooming a man’s body very easy. One of the best features is the built-in handle extension that makes it very easy to shave back hair off. The wide head means it will take less strokes to get the job done as well.
A dual shaving and trimming head allows for a very comfortable trim across all of the body – no exceptions!
Like many of the other Norelco products, the BG 2038 is shower-proof and water resistant. Between the warm water softening the body hair, and the lack of sweeping after a quick trim, this is often cited as the unit’s best feature.
The Bodygroom 2040 (click here for the full review) is one of the top body hair trimmers available from Philips Norelco. It is also called the Bodygroom Pro. This unit has many top features including:
- self-sharpening blades
- five built-in length settings
- a pivoting head
- cordless operation
- 50 minutes of run time with only one hour to full recharge
- hypo-allergenic foil on the shaver
- rounded-tip blades for no abrasive contact with the skin.
Unlike some other units, the BG2040 is water resistant and is designed to be used in the shower. Dry trimming works extremely well, but if you want to trim body hair in the shower, the BG 2040 can take care of it for you.
As noted above, this unit is powered by rechargeable batteries. It is extremely important that you read and follow the instructions regarding the charging of the unit. Leaving the device on the charger all of the time can actually shorten battery life. Therefore, follow the user manual precisely to maximize how long you can use the unit.
Norelco is the US branding name for shaving and other personal grooming products sold in the United States by Philips. However, Philips does sell some of their products without the Norelco name. The Philips TT2021 is one of those items. The TT2021 is a trimmer in the Bodygroom line. It has the same high quality construction and warranty that the Norelco branded products do.
The TT 2021 trimmer uses three different length combs – 3mm, 5mm and 7mm – to adjust the length of the trimming. Removing the combs altogether allows you to use the grooming tool to shave the body.
Like the high end BG2040, this unit is useable in the shower. Philips states the trimmer is 100% waterproof. This means you can keep the hairs off the bathroom floor and easily clean the trimmer when you are done.
This is a cordless unit that uses a rechargeable battery to keep things running. Battery life is about 50 minutes, but the full charge time is eight hours.
Axe Body Groomer
The Axe Body Groomer is a hair removal tool developed and sold by Philips Norelco in partnership with Axe, a brand of male deodorants. Axe is a trendy brand, and partnering with Norelco to make a groomer was a business decision made by both companies. The trimmer is similar to the existing BG2028 Bodygroom.
Like the other hair trimmers in the Norelco line-up, the Axe uses a rechargeable battery that is rated for 50 minutes of continuous run time. The tool comes with a single 5mm comb for maintaining a little extra length.
Body Shaving for Men
Shaving body hair from areas other than the face is something that many men have not made the time to do. This is unfortunate as it has many benefits including:
- cooler in the summer
- more attractive to women
- less sweating means less smell
- feels much better
The Philips Norelco line of body grooming tools are really well thought out and are designed to help a man take care of all of his needs without bringing in someone else. Consider these tips to using and maintaining your trimmer and shaver.
How to Use the Bodygroom
Each of the models is configured slightly differently. Some have detachable combs for length adjustment, while others have them built in to the unit. So take a look at what you have and adjust the trimmer to the proper length.
It is recommended that you first trim any hair. This will thin out the work that will need to be done by the shaver later. While the shaver can cut through a thick stretch of body hair, the trimmer is much more effective. Then once it is thinned, the shaver can do its job in a much more efficient manner.
Generally, shaving after a hot shower will be better than shaving without. The warm water will soften the hairs and will make both trimming and shaving much easier. For the models of Bodygroom that allow you to shave while in the shower, consider trying that. Apply a good lather of shaving soap or gel and then give the shaver a run.
Many people swear by a shower shave gel called Brave Soldier Shower Shave. This shaving gel was specially formulated for body hair shaving in the shower. Users claim this is the best lubricant on the market for body grooming. Of course, the gel does not have to be used in the shower. If you want to use the shave gel standing in the bathroom, it will serve you well in the way also.
We should note that Brave Soldier Shower Shave is a supporter of Ride 2 Recovery, a volunteer organization that helps wounded vets to recover from war wounds through the use of bicycle therapy.
For many people, this will provide a close cut while keeping things comfortable. Irritation is always a possibility, but as you learn how your body reacts to the trimming process, you will develop ways to avoid it.
Post Shaving Tips
Once you have trimmed or shaven, you want to make sure you take care of the skin where you have been working. A good body lotion is often the best preventative to irritated skin. Find a moisturizer or lotion that does not use alcohol. Alcohol will actually dry out the skin making things worse.
Some people have had a great deal of success with Bliss Ingrown Eliminating Pads when dealing with the more sensitive areas. The pads use alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acid combined with a green tea and oat extract. Reviews indicate that the pads are mild but work very well at preventing ingrown hairs from close shaves in sensitive areas.
Some men have had a great deal of success using a medicated body powder like Gold Bond. Gold Bond has zinc oxide that helps to minimize irritation. Additionally, the menthol in the powder helps to cool and prevent itching.
How to Charge the Grooming Tool
As one might expect, different models use different kinds of batteries. Each battery has specific requirements to charging to get the most out of their lifespan. Many of the battery packs used in these trimmers are NiMH. Make sure you read and follow the directions listed in the instruction manual that comes with your shaver.
As a general rule, you only want to charge the battery on your Bodygroom when the “charge” light comes on. You do not want to leave the unit on the charger all of the time. Doing so will actually cause the battery to lose its life. So even a relatively new battery might not run for the full 50 minutes because it was kept on the charger full-time.
Each of the models has a specific charge time. Many of the Philips Norelco units will completely charge in one hour. Others will take up to eight hours to build a full charge.
How to Clean the Bodygroom
Cleaning a Philips Norelco body hair trimmer is a fairly easy process. Doing it right will help ensure years of service without having to frequently change the blades or install a replacement head. Here are the general steps to take. Keep in mind that each model may have specific instructions that are unique to it. Read through the manual to make sure you know the manufacturer’s recommended steps for cleaning the tool properly.
Cleaning the Shaving Unit
- Make sure the Bodygroom is turned off. Unplug the trimmer and/or the charging stand from the AC outlet or other power supply.
- Holding the shaving head by the plastic housing, gently pull it off of the tool.
- With warm water, rinse the shaving head thoroughly. Standard water from the faucet is fine. Distilled water is not required.
- Using the included cleaning brush, sweep out the unit where cut hairs are collected.
- If there is still debris in the hair capture chamber, you can rinse this out with warm water like you did with the trimming head.
- Rinse the body under warm water.
- Allow everything to air dry completely. A soft towel may be used on the shaver body, but should not be used on the shaving portion (foil or blades) as this will have the effect of dulling the cutting edges.
Cleaning the Trimming Unit
- As you did with the shaving unit, make sure the trimming unit is unplugged and turned off.
- Slide the trimming comb off of the Bodygroom.
- Using your thumb, push the center section of the trimmer upward until it pops open.
- Using the included cleaning brush, sweep out the cut hairs from the area where they are collected during trimming. As with before, this area can be flushed out with warm water.
- The trimming unit can also be flushed with warm, running water.
- Allow everything to air dry, and then snap the trimming tool and comb back together. There should be an audible click when things are right again.
- The entire grooming unit can also be rinsed under warm water. Towel it off immediately after being rinsed.
A few notes about cleaning the shaver and trimming unit. Under no circumstances should you use canned air or air from a compressor. Likewise, you should not use any chemicals or abrasives to clean the unit. The supplied brush and warm water are the only things needed to properly clean the Bodygroom.
Also, you should never attempt to clean the unit while it is on and running. This can damage the motor and may cause you injury. When cleaning the units, do not apply pressure to the foil shaving head. This can dent and damage the shaver, making it less effective when being used for grooming.
Warranties can vary from model to model, and may change over time. At the time of this writing, all of the Philips Norelco Bodygroom models come with a 45-day money-back guarantee plus a two year warranty. The guarantee allows the user to return the body trimmer for a full refund if he or she is not completely satisfied with its performance.
The warranty backs the purchase against material or workmanship defects for two years from the purchase date. Of course you need to retain the sales receipt for Philips Norelco to honor the agreement. If a problem comes up, the company states they will repair or replace the grooming tool free of charge.
Again, make sure you check the individual warranty when you are purchasing one of these units. Philips Norelco has an excellent reputation in the industry, so you can trust their warranties.
If you have any doubts about shaving your back hair or trimming other parts of your body, consider the woman’s point of view. Men, generally, are in the business of cleaning up just for the sake of attracting the attention of the fairer sex. So, it is exceptionally important to get their opinion on what looks best. Consider this video in which one woman offers her thoughts on a man looks like with (and without) excessive body hair.
