If you are looking for an amazing solution for beard trimming and other body hair grooming needs, you should definitely take a look at the Panisonic Milano Series beard trimmer. Not only is it an amazing tool for sculpting facial hair, it is also exceptional for other body hair trimming.
The Panasonic Milano series body grooming tools are the best you can buy from this company. They offer a lot of features, exceptional performance and still keep a very reasonable price. Read this Panasonic Milano Series ER-GB40-S review for all of the details on this remarkable groomer.
In general terms, the Milano is a cordless men’s beard trimmer that runs on rechargeable batteries and can be used wet or dry. It has an easy-to-use adjustment system for altering beard length, is rugged and feels good in the hand. The following information highlights the best features of the Milano trimmer.
The ER-GB40-S offers 19 different hair trimming lengths, from 1 to 10 mm. The shortest length is 1mm and it steps up on half millimeter increments from there. Most beard trimmers will not do 0.5 mm adjustments, so if you are particular about the length, this Panasonic might be at the top of your list.
The adjustment setting is a click-adjustable dial that is conveniently placed in reach of the thumb. Once your setting is selected, it locks into place to prevent accidental changes. So, there are no worries about the adjustment getting moved while the trimmer is packed in your luggage.
Since the trimming lengths are precisely measured, you will know exactly what length to return to if you use the trimmer on other areas of the body. For example, if you prefer 3mm on your face, but 5mm on your chest, you can quickly make those adjustments and return again without any question of being in the right spot.
Panasonic uses a high-powered battery in this beard trimmer that allows the unit to run for 50 minutes before needing to recharge. Fifty minutes is a long time to work on your beard and other body hair. Generally, I would expect to get four complete trims (body and beard) out of this before needing to recharge.
If you have a lot of thick hair, you might only get three. A lot of people can go for several weeks on a single charge.
A recharging base is included with the set, and a complete charge takes 15 hours. This is longer than I would like to see, but it does not hinder me at all. When I need to charge it, I can plug it in when I leave for work and it will be ready for me the next morning. No big deal.
Since there is a base, the 50 minutes of running time is important to me. I don’t want to pack the recharging base with me every time I fly. However, I can expect to get at least a full week of use out of a fully charged battery. So, I can just throw the Milano into the bag with me and off I go.
One thing that is important to know regards the initial charge. When you plug in and charge the trimmer for the first time, it should charge for at least 23 hours before use. Additionally, if you do not use the groomer for an extended period of time – more than six months – you should again let it sit on the charger for at least 23 hours.
According to Panasonic, the battery should last about three years with normal use. My Panasonic trimmer has been running almost four years and still holds a charge nicely. Fortunately, the battery is user-replaceable. More information on that in the maintenance section below.
Super Sharp Blades
The stainless steel blades are very sharp and provide a precise, 45˚cut. Stainless steel blades will provide a great degree of corrosion resistance, which is very important in a bathroom environment. The blades are self-sharpening, so there is no need to try to have them serviced.
The blades are, of course, hypo-allergenic. Blades on the Panasonic beard trimmer can be replaced. Even though they are self sharpening, over a period of several years, the blades can be replaced by the user. I detail this more in the maintenance section below.
Panasonic recommends you do not use a shaving cream with these blades. It seems the properties of shaving cream can actually score stainless steel. The company states that the blades should last for around three years. I would imagine keeping them cleaned and well-oiled will extend their life for several years beyond that.
This is one of the very few beard trimmers that will work in the shower. If you like to take care of your grooming needs in the shower, the Panasonic Milano Series ER-GB40-S is almost a necessity. Few other trimmers are sealed for total immersion.
The body of the groomer is completely sealed to prevent water intrusion. You can stand under running water to take care of all of your grooming needs and not worry a moment about the tool. This beard trimmer is designed to handle wet environments.
A huge advantage to taking care of your body hair grooming in the shower is that it eliminates the need for extra clean up after a trim. All of us have trimmed in the bathroom and you have to sweep up immediately afterward.
Some people simply prefer to take care of grooming tasks while hot water is washing over them. This is the grooming tool you want if that describes you.
Washing the unit is not a problem even if you do not use it in the shower. There is a special water channel to drain and wash away all of the hair trimmings.
The body of the trimmer is rubber coated, allowing for a good grip even when wet. This might not sound like a big deal, but once you are in the shower, you will quickly realize how important it is.
After you wet trim your beard, you want to make sure you rinse the tool with fresh water. Once you have done so, oil the blades with a light oil like that used for sewing machines. Panasonic has included a small amount of oil with the trimmers in the past. I have no idea if they will change that in the future.
Using the Panasonic trimmer can be described in one word: delightful.
This machine runs like a top and is exceptionally efficient. Hair trimming is very easy and I have not experienced any problems with hair being pulled. The adjustment dial works as advertised, and I like that it locks into place.
I use this tool mainly for my beard trimming, but I have also used it for other body hair. I’m at the point where I really like a specialized tool for each job. This works great for my beard, but I kind of like the Philips Norelco Bodygroom BG2040 I reviewed here for the rest of my body.
The Panasonic works very well on all areas of the body, so you don’t need a second trimming unit. However, I like having my facial hair grooming tools kept separately from those that go over other areas of my body.
Parts and Maintenance
Maintaining the Panasonic ER-GB40-S is pretty easy and straightforward. Generally, you want to keep the unit clean and the blades oiled. Other than that, the unit should not need any regular maintenance. There are two parts that can be replaced by the user: the blade and the battery. Let’s take a look at each of these areas.
Cleaning and Oiling
Cleaning the Milano trimmer is straightforward. The exterior of the case can be rinsed off or wiped down with a damp cloth. No chemicals should ever be used on the groomer. If you have a stubborn dirt deposit, a mild dish detergent can be used. In the vast majority of cases soap will not be required.
The blades can be rinsed with warm running water. Tap water from the faucet is fine. You do not need to use distilled water. A special drain hole is integrated into the ER-GB40-S that allows the running water to rinse away and cut hairs.
It is important to oil the cutting blades after rinsing them. Stainless steel is rust resistant, but it can still corrode. Therefore, it is exceptionally important to add the oil as a corrosion preventative. The oil also helps prevent undo wear on the blades when in use.
The replacement blade model number is WER9606P. The extra blades can be had for about $20, and will get you another 3+ years of service from the trimmer. Specific instructions on how to replace the blades are included with the replacement part.
The battery in the Panasonic Milano is a nickel metal hydride type. It is replaceable by the owner, and the detailed instructions are included in the user manual. However, Panasonic does not sell the replacement batteries directly. There are other companies that specialize in batteries for small tools and electronics that can provide you with the correct replacement.
There are good beard trimmers and really great ones. The Panasonic Milano Series ER-GB40-S is definitely a great trimmer. It offers a lot of very high-end features and is one of the few grooming tools that will work fine in running water.
The cuts are precise and clean without pulling hair. The battery runs nearly twice as long as many other beard trimmers. As far as I am concerned, this is a five-star trimmer.
